On a Roll: The Best Rolling Papers of 2024

A guide to choosing the best rolling papers: from the best rolling paper brands to materials, shapes, and sizes.

There’s a hot debate raging about the best way to consume your cannabis. Some people insist that vaping technology is the best thing to ever happen in the wide world of weed. Others swear by their bongs and pipes. For some folks, however, you just can’t beat the simplicity and ritual of rolling an old-school joint and lighting up.

Why Roll Your Own?

As long as there has been people who smoke weed, there have been people who roll their own joints. Today, there are an endless array of options for consuming cannabis. Pipes, bongs, and vaporizers have given tokers a variety of ways to get their buzz on. Although many argue that other methods are smoother, get you higher, or don’t put off as much smoke or odor, the roll-your-own method is still hugely popular. Why is this?

First of all, rolling your own smoke is cheap. You don’t need any equipment beyond a weed grinder (if you’re going to do it properly), your papers, and a lighter. It’s much less expensive to buy loose bud than to purchase it pre-rolled, as well. While rolling your own takes practice, it’s not hard to master with time. Why pay someone else to do the work for you?

Many people also enjoy the ritual of lovingly grinding up their bud and then carefully rolling a beautiful joint. While almost anyone can roll a joint that’s basically functional, there’s an art to rolling one that’s attractive, burns smoothly, and pulls just the right amount of air through it. It’s a time-honored ritual that should be respected.

Ask any cannabis sage and they’ll tell you that when it comes to creating the perfect joint, rolling papers matter. They can affect every aspect of your smoking experience—from the shape and size of your joint to its flavor and burn rate. For the next time you buy rolling papers online, here are the things you need to know in order to make the most out of your bud.

Types of Rolling Papers

To start off with, let’s talk about the different types of rolling papers you’ll be able to find once you start looking. While potheads used to be relegated to whatever their local head shop had in stock, these days, the internet provides access to any type of rolling paper you can imagine—and many you’ve never even begun to imagine.

The Best Regular (Traditional & Premium) Rolling Papers

Perhaps the best-known type of rolling paper are the regular ones. These are simple and low-key. Many people like regular rolling papers because they can quietly enjoy a joint that is visually indistinguishable from a hand-rolled cigarette. They’re typically made from rice paper, but these days, more brands are branching out into hemp rolling papers.

Let’s discuss the brands behind some of our favorite regular rolling papers. Each of these top manufacturers has papers available in a variety of shapes and sizes in everything from regular packs of papers to rolls and pre-rolled cones.

1. RAW Rolling Papers

For those who prefer a chemical-free smoking experience, RAW’s line of unrefined rolling papers is a natural alternative. They have chlorine-free regular papers, as well as a line made from additive-free, organic hemp. Their patented CrissCross watermark helps ensure an even burn, providing an incredibly smooth smoke while preventing annoying runs.

Made in Alcoy, Spain, RAW rolling papers have a distinctive look. This is partly due to their unique watermark, but it’s also because the lack of chemicals used during production leaves the paper with a more natural light brown color. The papers are thin and burn slowly, giving you time to kick back and enjoy.

In addition to making top-notch products, RAW has a foundation that helps feed and provide water (in addition to other much-needed services) to people in need throughout the world.

2. Smoking Rolling Papers

Founded in 1929, the Smoking brand of rolling papers has found its way into the hearts of generations of tokers and homemade cigarette smokers. They use no chemical colorings or additives in order to provide a healthier experience for their customers. Committed to producing environmentally-friendly products, Smoking features many Tree-Free labeled products that were produced without destroying precious forests. Smoking rolling papers are available in three sizes: regular (69x37mm), medium (77x37mm), and king-size (108x37mm).

Some of their most known products are:

  • Smoking Master is the ideal choice for those who want an ultra thin, slow-burning paper.
  • Smoking Red provides a slow-burning paper that’s medium weight.
  • Smoking White is what people choose when they want a paper that’s similar to what you’d find in a manufactured cigarette. These are the thickest and fastest-burning in the Smoking lineup.

3. Rizla Rolling Papers

Those hoping to buy rolling papers with amazing quality and an equally-interesting story should check out Rizla Rolling Papers. Founded in France by the Lacroix family, the tradition behind these rolling papers dates back several hundred years to a time when Napoleon’s troops needed rolling papers to roll their own cigarettes while they were away at war. The company ramped up production to meet the increased demand.

The now-famous name has an interesting origin, as well. While they were first made of tissue, the manufacturer switched to rice in 1865. “Riz” is the French word for rice. The family added a “la” at the end as an homage to the Lacroix family name (which translates into “the cross” in French). This brought about the brand name “Rizla” with a cross emblazoned on the package.

Rizla brand makes some of the most high-quality, best rolling papers, with each type being easily identifiable by the color of its package:

  • Rizla Blue Rolling Papers leave out the chlorine, making them a great choice for those who wish a healthier smoke.
  • Rizla Silver Rolling Papers are delicately thin. This means that they burn ever so slow and barely leave behind any ash. These aren’t for folks who are looking to avoid chemicals, as they contain additives that help strengthen the paper and make it beautifully translucent. Be gentle when licking these papers to seal them and never “baptize” a joint made with Rizla Silver paper, or it will disintegrate before your eyes.
  • Rizla Red Rolling Papers are the medium-thickness choice in the lineup. They burn more quickly but still leave behind minimal amounts of ash.
  • Rizla Green Rolling Papers are also medium thickness. They’re different from the Reds, though, as they have cut corners that make rolling your joint much easier.
  • Rizla Orange Rolling Papers are a great blast from the past for those who would like to experience the very first flavored rolling papers on the market. They have a light, subtle licorice flavor with just a hint of sweetness—great for an occasional treat.

1. Juicy Jay’s Flavored Rolling Papers

When it comes to flavored rolling papers, Juicy Jay’s is king. Some flavored rolling paper manufacturer’s only add flavor to the gum strip. Not Juicy Jay’s. When you light up a joint rolled with a Juicy Jay’s paper, you’ll experience their amazing “triple-dipped” flavoring system.

The result? In addition to a tasty flavor and subtle sweetness infused with the smoke, you’ll be left with a wonderful taste on your lips. You won’t get the chemical taste that’s so common with other flavored rolling papers.

Juicy Jay’s Rolling Papers are incredibly attractive, too, with each paper colorfully decorated to represent your flavor choice. The ink is soy-based and the papers are made from hemp and natural sugar gum, so don’t fret about unhealthy, artificial ingredients lurking in your rolling papers.

The flavor options are endless. Fruit fans will be able to find their favorites among the apple, blackberry, cherry, coconut, orange, pineapple, strawberry, watermelon, and many more. 2. Cyclones Flavored Cones

Speaking of pre-rolled cones, the question of how to roll a tight, good-looking joint is one that weed smokers old and new have debated over many years. Tips and suggestions have piled up, adding to the huge volume of cannabis lore that already exists. The best solution for those whose joint-rolling skills could use some improvement is to simply buy Cyclones flavored pre-rolled cones.

Just because you’re buying pre-rolled cones doesn’t mean you get left out of the exciting world of flavored rolling papers, however. Cyclones brought pre-rolled cones to the market in 2003 and have developed a loyal following ever since.

Cyclones make their clear flavored cones out of a chemical-free, natural cellulose fiber and uses a triple-dip procedure that causes them to taste and smell wonderful. They burn evenly and provide an incredibly smooth smoke. Enjoy regular fruit flavors such as grape and blueberry or rock out to pimperschnapps, a peach-mint concoction that will drive your mouth wild.

For those who prefer natural ingredients, try the Cyclones pre-rolled hemp cones. The inner and outer leaf of each cone is flavored for a sweet smoke with a slow burn. Each pre-rolled cone comes with a reusable Dank 7 wooden tip. Cyclones soaks their wooden tips in flavor for 7 days, meaning that you’ll enjoy the smooth taste with each and every puff.

All Cyclones pre-rolled cones come packed in a protective tube so that they don’t get smashed or mangled before you get the chance to pack them full and light up.

The Best Gold Rolling Papers

Most people roll their own because it’s cheaper than buying pre-rolled joints. For the folks who roll their own with gold rolling papers, the goal isn’t to save money; it’s to broadcast luxury. Gold rolling papers show that you literally have money to burn. To really make an impression or start a conversation at the next party, light up a joint that’s rolled in 24K gold.

1. Shine 24K Gold Rolling Papers

Shine dominates the gold rolling paper market, manufacturing papers that are fit for a king. Its story starts in 2013, when its founder Dave D. He was enjoying a Black Tie cigar that was wrapped in edible 24K gold and loved the sophisticated, high-roller look that the gold wrap gave his expensive cigar. He decided to create luxury rolling papers that would allow anyone to bling up their smoke at a party or on special occasions.

Who knew that edible gold could also be smokable gold? With their precise combination of gold and hemp, Shine papers provide a slow and consistent burn that’s much like a cigar. They’re also incredibly expensive. You’ll spend over fifty bucks for a 12-pack of 1 1/4 Shine 24K rolling papers. They’re also available in a less-expensive 2-pack, as well as king-sized 24K gold cones.

Naturally, the celebrity world took to Shine papers right away. Everyone from rapper 2 Chainz to pop star Miley Cyrus has given Shine their seal of approval. After all, nothing shows off your style and status better than gold.

Many people frequently question whether or not gold rolling papers are safe. Shine points to a study that shows no ill effects from heavy gold inhalation in rats. They also note that their papers are designed so that the edible gold (which is on the exterior of the paper) falls away with the ashes.

This creates a beautiful effect as your ashtray collects the tiny gold flecks. With Shine, you can sit back and enjoy the smooth, slow-burning smoke while smiling and fielding questions from curious passersby.

The Best Clear Rolling Papers

Sometimes showing off is about more than just having a bling-y joint. It can also be about literally showing off your weed. That’s the thinking behind clear rolling papers. Why hide your beautiful bud behind a bunch of paper when you can roll an amazing joint that lets you see the strain you’ve packed inside?

It’s about more than the visual, though. Devotees of clear rolling papers enjoy them because they don’t take away from the taste of the weed. Because they’re made of biodegradable cellulose, they’re a much safer and healthier choice than some rolling paper options.

1. Aleda Clear Rolling Papers

To go completely chemical-free with your rolling papers, give Aleda brand a try. Made in Brazil, these clear papers use 100% cellulose, giving you a way to show off your bud without toking on a bunch of unhealthy chemicals.

Aleda clear rolling papers burn evenly and slow for a fantastic smoke. Best of all, the papers have zero taste, which allows you to enjoy the flavor of your strain without any additives interfering with the flavor. Give them a try in King Size or go smaller with Aleda Mini 1 1/4 rolling papers.

Rolling Paper Sizes

When it comes to choosing the best rolling papers, you’ll have more than just different brands and flavors to choose from. As you begin to shop,  you’ll quickly discover that rolling papers are available in a variety of different sizes. This leads many weed-smoking novices to ask, “What size should I look for when I buy rolling papers?”

How thick do you prefer your joints? How much bud do you want to stuff inside? You’ll don’t want to roll a joint with an excess amount of unused paper—if you do, well, you’ll be smoking extra paper, first of all. In addition to this, it may affect the way your joint burns. Extra paper will cause runs.

If you’re shopping for rolling papers in 2024, the choice in sizes is endless. From basic 1 1/4 to king size, it can be tough to know which size is best to suit your needs. Let’s discuss the sizes you’re likely to find (and a few more rare ones that you won’t see as often) and why people choose them. Keep in mind that the paper sizes mentioned may vary from brand to brand.

Single Wide Rolling Papers – For a paper with a small width that’s perfect for rolling up a compact, petite little joint, choose a single wide. They’re usually around 36 x 69 mm. These won’t hold a lot of material, so keep that in mind.

1 1/4 Rolling Papers – This is the standard rolling paper size that you’ll find when you purchase most basic packs. They’re typically around 77 x 44mm, depending on the brand.

1 1/2 Rolling Papers – To stretch out a bit beyond the standard 1 1/4 papers, try one-and-a-halfs. They’ll give you a bit more room to pack in extra bud. Keep in mind that going with a bigger paper simply because you have trouble rolling with regular papers isn’t the answer. If you’re not packing in more weed, you’ll end up with an excess of paper. This can affect burn rate, as well as flavor.

King Size Rolling Papers – To roll a longer joint, give king size papers a try. They’re 100 x 53mm. King-sized papers tend to be a bit thicker, which will make for a faster burn rate than thinner skins.

King Size Slim Rolling Papers – For a king-sized length with a trimmer girth, king size slims are the perfect paper. They’re 110 x 44mm.

Huge/XXL Rolling Papers – Bigger and unusual sizes and shapes, which are totally awesome – but probably less popular.

While these are the sizes you’ll typically find in packs of rolling papers, when it comes to pre-rolled cones, you can find some VERY exciting sizes.

For the insatiable folks out there who simply can’t pack enough bud into regular- or king-sized skins, RAW makes Emperador pre-rolled cones that are 9 inches long. Want to roll one that you can puff, puff, pass…and pass…and pass? Then check out their 20 Stage Rawket Launcher, including 20 cones in total as well as 2 whopping 12 inches long supernatural cones.

Adding to the confusion, rolling papers come in a variety of different thicknesses—from extra fine all the way up to thick. A general rule of thumb is the thinner the paper, the slower the burn. Extra fine paper tends to go out easily; you’ll have to keep reigniting it. Lightweight and medium weight paper will have an increasingly faster burn rate.

Thick rolling papers are also known as “free-burning.” Light a joint that’s rolled with thick paper, put it down in and ashtray and wander off for a few minutes and you’ll come back to find your weed has gone up in smoke without you.

Rolling Paper Shapes

The variety in rolling papers is simply endless. Not only can you choose paper in any material, thickness, or size you’d like, but there are different shapes, as well. Let’s sort out the various wrapper shapes that are available to figure out which ones will work best for your next smoke.

Regular Packs of Rolling Paper

If you shop for a pack of rolling papers, you’re typically going to find any of the sizes mentioned above (single wide, 1 1/4, and so on), made of any of the materials mentioned below (rice, hemp, clear cellulose, etc.). Choose the smoking experience you’d like, but if you’re new to rolling your own or would like to branch out beyond regular paper, there are other options available.

Cut Corners – One of the struggles that longtime cannabis enthusiasts commiserate over is being unable to find the gum on a rolling paper, especially if they’re trying to roll a joint quickly or are rolling in poor lighting conditions. When you buy rolling papers with cut corners, the guesswork is gone. Simply feel for the corner with the cut to tell where the gum is. Then simply load, lick, and light up! The cut corners make tucking while rolling a lot easier, too.

Pouches – Rolling papers with pouches are great for newbies. Simply drop a bit of herb into the pouch without worrying about it falling out, then roll it up. While you’ll end up with a bit more paper involved than using a regular flat paper, this method certainly beats losing your weed all over the floor.

Pre-Rolled Cones

While they’re not as convenient to carry in your back pocket as a pack of rolling papers, pre-rolled cones are perfect for people who haven’t yet mastered joint-rolling. These nifty little skins let you ditch flat rolling paper sheets altogether and pack your bud in a convenient, joint-shaped cone. Both RAW and Cones brands offer pre-rolled cones in different materials and sizes that range from “nothing to see here; just a standard joint” to Godzilla-sized cones that you simply have to pass around.

If you’re looking for cones with delicious taste, Cyclones specializes in creating pre-rolled cones that come in a huge variety of flavors. Whether you’d like to shake up your smoke by making it more tasty or create the perfect-sized joint, pre-rolled cones have got you covered.

Paper Rolls

To really have the freedom to express yourself via the art of joint rolling, give paper rolls a try. These allow you to customize your smoke any way you’d like. Choose from a roll in any width you’d like—from Single Wide, 1 1/4, 1 1/2, all the way to King Size or King Size Slim. Then roll a joint that’s as long as you’d like. Roll a tiny little one-hit wonder or a gargantuan spliff that’s an entire foot long.

While other people patchwork multiple rolling papers together to create a larger joint, paper rolls let you really stretch out. RAW and Smoking are known for their exceptional paper rolls, especially for those who would like a smooth smoke that’s free of chemicals. For flavored paper, as always, Juicy Jay’s has you covered.

Which Materials Make the Best Rolling Papers?

The answer to this is…it depends on your personal preference. Some folks swear by tried-and-true, regular old paper, while others will only roll their bud in hemp. For others, there’s no better joint than one encased in delicate rice paper. The next section looks at some of the most common rolling paper materials, as well as the pros and cons of each.

Paper

When it comes to basic rolling papers, that are made of, well, paper, some made of wood pulp and others are made of a combination of wood pulp and hemp. Some paper skins are bleached, those who would like to avoid chemicals need to look for unbleached, all-natural rolling papers. Many people don’t like the taste of some brands of rolling papers made of wood pulp because they can impart a harsh taste as they burn. Paper that’s ultra-thin can be notoriously difficult to roll, while thicker papers are best for novices.

Flax

Perhaps you’ve heard about the benefits of eating flax seed, but have you heard about the benefits of using flax rolling papers? Ok, maybe you’re not getting all of those wonderful flax nutrients when you smoke it as paper, but you’re also not getting a lot of the chemicals that are used to manufacture other kinds of rolling papers. Flax rolling papers feel good to the touch. While they are smooth and silky, they aren’t hard to roll with the way other smoother papers are. People enjoy them because they don’t impart a flavor to the weed inside.

Rice

Rice rolling papers are made from compressed rice. While some of them use natural ingredients, others use additives, so if you’re trying to go chemical-free, do a bit of research on how specific brands manufacture their papers.

While rice rolling papers are pretty common and easy to find, they can be tough for joint-rolling newbies because they’re typically low-friction and don’t provide a lot of grip. Once you get a nice joint fixed up, rice paper imparts little to no taste to your weed, making for a smooth, pleasant smoke. They do burn really quickly, though, which can cause a lot of the bud inside to go up in smoke while you’re not actually puffing on it.

Buy Online: Rice Rolling Papers (Amazon)

Hemp

If you’d like to buy rolling papers that are environmentally-conscious and a natural companion to cannabis, try hemp rolling papers. Their great grip make hemp papers a much better choice for beginners than smooth rice papers. They’re also slower burning, giving you more of a chance to enjoy your stash without wasting it.

Hemp papers do impart a bit of a taste to the weed, though. While some people enjoy the taste and prefer it as part of their smoking experience, others are put out by it.

Buy Online: Organic Hemp Rolling Papers (Amazon)

Blunt Wraps

While this article is specifically focusing on joints, blunt wraps are worth a mention here, too. Blunts are made by rolling cannabis into a tobacco leaf. This gives the smoker the benefit of a nicotine buzz, as well as a marijuana high. Opinions on blunts are mixed. Some people swear that the tobacco/cannabis combination gets them higher. Others don’t like the harshness that the tobacco adds to the mix. (Due to the latter, blunts aren’t a good choice for beginner smokers.) Either way, blunt wraps—both in flavored and unflavored varieties—are here to stay. Hemp wraps are also very popular.

Clear

In recent years, clear rolling papers have taken the cannabis world by storm. It’s simply cool to be able to see the weed inside after you’ve worked to roll the perfect J or created a nicely-packed, pre-rolled cone. While clear papers look like they’re made out of some sort of carcinogenic plastic wrap, they’re actually made of a plant-based cellulose that doesn’t contain many of the chemicals that other papers can have.

Like all rolling papers, clear papers have their fans and their critics. People who love them say that they enjoy the fact that they don’t impart any flavor to the cannabis inside. Others insist that they can taste the cellulose. Perhaps the biggest criticism of clear rolling papers is that people often have trouble rolling a joint in a paper that’s practically invisible. In addition to this, clear papers can be tough to use in humid environments, as they will often wrinkle and try to fold over when the air is moist.

…And a Few Others

While they didn’t make the top of the list for 2024, it’s worth mentioning a few other noteworthy brands in the rolling paper world. If you haven’t yet tried these, don’t miss a chance to give them a shot.

Zig-Zag Rolling Papers

The standard pack of Zig-Zag Orange 1 1/4 papers are perhaps the best-known skins in the stoner world. And why not? Zig-Zag has been in the rolling paper business since 1879.

Zig-Zag manufactures its papers from natural plant flax fibers. They’re rather thin papers without much of a grip, so newbies would be better off to stick with a thicker paper or a pre-rolled cone.

OCB Rolling Papers

No, Dad—OCB is not the name of a blunt-puffing rapper. Rather, it stands for Odet-Cascadec-Bolloré, a company that was founded by René Bolloré in 1918. OCB papers are heavier, making them a great choice for those who are still working to perfect their joint-rolling technique. They burn evenly and don’t leave behind tons of ash, making them a classic choice for roll-your-own enthusiasts.

Cones brand pre-rolled cones are a wonderful choice for smokers who don’t have the time or the know-how to roll their own from scratch. With thin, airtight paper, Cones brand ensures a smooth, long-lasting smoke without runs. Even better? Each pre-rolled cone comes equipped with a paper filter tip to ensure good airflow, keep the bud on the correct side of the joint, and keep you from wasting that very last puff when it burns down to the end.

Cones brand is one of the most cost-effective ways to purchase pre-rolled cones. While other brands sell their Cones individually-wrapped, Cones features a selection of different sizes (King and 1 1/4, for instance) in packs that run from small (only 3) to “ready to party” (how about a box that totals 75 cones?).

When You Need a Helping Hand…

Even the pros like a little help with rolling up some dank deliciousness. For single roll-your-owns, rolling machines are fantastic to form the perfect joint. If you’d like to fill a large number of cones and do it fast, cone filling machines are the way to go.

Rolling Machines

Rolling machines basically all work the same: put your pre-rolled tip and bud on the roller’s apron (the fabric that wraps around the roller). Then slide your rolling paper in and roll, roll away to get a beautiful, smokable joint that’s ready to go.

Customers love RAW papers, so of course they naturally love their rollers, as well. As with rolling papers, rolling machines come in a variety of sizes, from 70mm all the way up to king-sized 110mm. Not a RAW fan? It’s easy to find a roller emblazoned with your favorite brand, whether it’s Rizla, Zig Zag or Juicy Jay’s. When you wear the apron on your machine out from rolling joints all the time, it’s easy to get a replacement apron, slap it on, and keep right on going.

While there are electric rolling machines available, those are mostly used for cigarette rolling. For rolling gorgeous joints, cannabis connoisseurs that are in-the-know prefer the good old manual rollers.

I’ll take Flax papers all day. American Spirit uses them in their cigarette tubes and used to use them in their RYO. Rizla Blue is probably the best Flax papers. Canna Wraps are also quite nice and leave no aftertaste. OCB Solaire slims are nice for long joints. Not a big fan of Zigs. They blow out and canoe by the second puff.
